Overview

Tetbury, an historic wool town in the southern Cotswolds, boasts a rich heritage dating back to at least the 7th century. Its name is believed to derive from the Saxon landowner Tetta, with "bury" meaning fort or settlement.

The town's architecture reflects its prosperous past as a major wool and yarn market town in the Middle Ages. The town center is dominated by the Market House, built in 1655 and supported by 33 pillars. This iconic building still serves as a market venue and is a testament to Tetbury's commercial history.

Tetbury's streets are lined with beautiful 16th and 17th-century wool merchants' houses, many of which now house charming shops, cafes, and restaurants. The Chipping Steps, a steep cobbled street flanked by weavers' cottages, is one of the town's most picturesque spots and a reminder of its textile heritage.

St Mary's Church, with its 18th-century Gothic revival spire rising 186 feet, is one of the tallest and most elegant in the UK. The church houses several interesting historical features, including a wine glass pulpit and a 1630 silver chalice.

Tetbury is perhaps best known for its royal connections. Highgrove, the private residence of King Charles III, is located just outside the town. While the house itself is not open to the public, its beautiful organic gardens can be visited on guided tours during summer months.

The town has a strong antiques trade, with many shops specializing in furniture and decorative items. The Tetbury Police Museum, housed in the original Victorian police station, offers an interesting glimpse into 19th-century law enforcement.

Culinary experiences in Tetbury range from traditional to innovative. The Close Hotel, housed in a 16th-century town house, offers fine dining using locally sourced ingredients. For a more casual experience, The Snooty Fox, a classic coaching inn, serves hearty pub fare. Don't miss trying local specialties like Gloucestershire Old Spot pork or artisanal cheeses from nearby farms.

Tetbury is also known for its commitment to sustainability. It was one of the first UK towns to become plastic-bag free, and it hosts an annual Woolsack Race, where competitors carry heavy sacks of wool up and down a steep hill, celebrating the town's wool heritage.

The Tetbury Goods Shed Arts Centre, housed in a renovated Victorian railway building, hosts art exhibitions, music performances, and community events, adding to the town's cultural vibrancy.

Tetbury's blend of history, royal connections, and commitment to both tradition and sustainability make it a unique and fascinating destination in the Cotswolds.
